THE 2006 NEW YORKER ARTICLE
The Malcolm Gladwell Article: "What The Dog Saw"
* This breathless article in awe of Millan did a LOT of damage.
The Jon Bee Episode Part 1
The Jon Bee Episode Part 2* This is the episode the article fawns about. Season 2, Episode 4, 2006
* This episode is before the episode where Millan is caught using a shock collar on a German shepherd dog.
* 3/17/2006: Spike, Jake & Nugget and Wendell, Season 2, Episode 9, 2006
* Millan never mentions on the episode that he is using a shock collar but people on the net start posting about it.
* A year later Millan spends the shortest time possible talking about Shock Collars and how he uses them sometimes.
This still is part of the Millan argument merry go round : "He tried to hide that he was using Shock Collars, and took the credit." " No, he said that he does, he's not hiding anything, I saw the episode." Point is: he used them secretly, never mentioning them for at least 2 seasons before being caught, and allowed the perception that it was his powers of "pack leadership," his "calm assertive" presence. that worked his instant magic. The admission was given, but not AS an admission, around season three: no mention that he would always tell you if and when he was using them. Just buried it in an episode, had to, now his defenders had something to say to the accusation. It worked, the issue has lost all traction.
* Could he have used a shock collar on JonBee? Unlike the Spike Episode where we could see the remote - often in his pocket, never mentioned, how often did he use shock when the cameras weren't rolling. How many minutes, hours, days between takes?
* I've often wondered if Millan's famous "Tsssch" sound is a sense/Pavlovian reminder of shocks done off camera.
